Apple iOS in the Car

iOS in the Car is Apple technology that integrates the iPhone with an automobile's built-in dashboard display, audio system and controls.

The technology allows motorists to view and interact with certain iPhone 5 (and later) features through the in-dash display in their vehicles. The four features mentioned at the WWDC were:

  • placing telephone calls using Siri Eyes Free
  • sending and receiving text messages and iMessages using Siri
  • playing music from an iPhone using the vehicle's built-in audio controls
  • getting directions and using satellite Global Positioning System (GPS) navigation with Apple Maps

Apple announced iOS in the Car at its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in June 2013.  As of this writing, specific details about iOS car integration are scarce. It is not known if Apple will build the in-dash hardware itself or simply license iOS in the Car software to auto manufacturers.
